COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Economics (MEcon) is a two-year postgraduate program consisting of 32 units designed to provide strong theoretical, quantitative, and applied training in economics. The program begins with 8 units of foundational courses, covering core areas such as microeconomics, macroeconomics, mathematical techniques for economics, and statistics for business and economics, ensuring students build essential analytical and quantitative skills. Students then complete 6 units of core courses, including econometrics, cost-benefit analysis and project evaluation, and research methods in economics, which develop advanced analytical and policy evaluation capabilities. The program includes 10 units of plan options, where students can either specialise in a field such as Applied Econometrics, Economics and Public Policy, or Health Economics, or choose a no-field pathway focused on flexible core economics courses. In addition, students complete 6 to 8 units of program electives, allowing further specialisation in areas such as financial markets, machine learning for economics, development economics, environmental economics, behavioural economics, and health policy. Electives may also include public policy and public health courses, or a thesis or industry placement option. Finally, students may take up to 2 units of general electives from advanced economics subjects. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in policy, consulting, finance, research, and international organisations by developing strong data analysis, econometric, and economic reasoning skills.
