COURSE CURRICULUM

The two-year Master of Applied Linguistics (MAppLing) program comprises 32 units and provides advanced knowledge and practical expertise in language learning, teaching, analysis, and communication across diverse professional and cultural contexts. The program begins with 8 units of foundational courses, including Introduction to Second Language Learning and Teaching, Structure of Language, Concepts in Applied Linguistics, and Academic English and Thesis Writing, which establish a strong theoretical and academic foundation. Students then complete 8 units of core courses covering Second Language Acquisition, Research Methods, Teaching Languages in a Global Context, and Language and Technology, developing essential research, analytical, and pedagogical skills. The program offers flexibility through a choice of Portfolio and Synthesis or Dissertation courses, allowing students to pursue either a professionally focused or research-oriented pathway. Students may also complete a specialised field of study in TESOL Studies or Language and Discourse Analysis, each consisting of 8 units of focused coursework. TESOL Studies explores curriculum design, language teaching methodologies, assessment, and educational policy, while Language and Discourse Analysis examines language use through text analysis, corpus linguistics, statistics, sociocultural perspectives, and communication studies. Additional elective courses enable further customisation of learning according to career goals. Graduates develop strong linguistic, research, communication, and intercultural competencies, preparing them for careers in education, TESOL, translation, publishing, language policy, discourse analysis, and language technology industries.
