COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) requires the completion of 32 units of study designed to prepare students for a professional career as secondary school teachers. This includes 16 units of core education courses that provide foundational knowledge in teaching methods, curriculum design, adolescent learning, classroom management, assessment strategies, inclusive education, and the use of educational technologies. These core courses develop the essential pedagogical skills needed to effectively teach and engage secondary school students across diverse learning environments. In addition, students complete 8 units of Professional Year Core Courses, which focus on advanced teaching practice, professional standards, and readiness for classroom responsibility, ensuring graduates are fully prepared for entry into the teaching profession. The final 8 units consist of Professional Year Curriculum Studies Courses, where students apply their pedagogical knowledge to specific subject areas aligned with their teaching specialisations, strengthening their expertise in delivering curriculum content effectively. The program also includes important requirements and conditions. Students must successfully complete the Literacy and Numeracy Test for Initial Teacher Education Students (LANTITE), or demonstrate recognised First Nations language proficiency, before graduation. During the Professional Year, concurrent study is not permitted, and this stage must be undertaken full-time, typically commencing in Semester 1, unless special approval is granted. Students must also meet work-integrated learning requirements, including holding a valid Blue Card for working with children. If all academic requirements are completed but LANTITE is not met, students may be awarded a Bachelor of Learning Studies (Secondary), which does not qualify for teacher registration in Australia.
