ABOUT UNIVERSITY

The University of Queensland (UQ) is a prominent public research university located primarily in Brisbane, the capital of the Australian state of Queensland. Established in 1909 by the Queensland parliament, UQ is one of Australia’s oldest and most prestigious institutions, classified among the six sandstone universities. It is also a founding member of edX, Australia’s Group of Eight, and the Association of Pacific Rim Universities, reflecting its strong international research reputation. The main campus, situated in the riverside suburb of St Lucia near Brisbane’s central business district, houses much of the university’s academic and research activity. Additional campuses include Gatton and Herston, home to the Mayne Medical School, and overseas offices such as the North America office in Washington D.C. and the UQ-Ochsner Clinical School in Louisiana. UQ offers a broad range of academic programs including associate, bachelor, master, doctoral, and higher doctorate degrees through multiple faculties and a graduate school. It supports over one hundred research institutes and centers, with notable contributions including pioneering the HPV vaccine that prevents cervical cancer, developing a COVID-19 vaccine that entered human trials, and advancing superconducting MRI technology for portable limb scanning. UQ boasts distinguished alumni such as two Nobel laureates, over one hundred Olympians, and numerous Rhodes Scholars. The university’s founding was preceded by decades of debate and community efforts dating back to the 1870s, including Royal Commissions and the Queensland University Extension Movement, which promoted adult education and practical university programs. Despite early resistance focused on technical education priorities and funding constraints, the university was eventually established with support for practical faculties in arts, law, medicine, science, and applied science. Today, UQ remains a leader in Australian and global higher education, known for its research, innovation, and impact.
