COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Teaching (Secondary) is a structured professional qualification designed to prepare graduates to become qualified secondary school teachers for Years 7 to 12. The program consists of 144 units of core required courses that focus on developing essential teaching competencies, including pedagogy, curriculum leadership, diversity and inclusion, literacy and numeracy across the curriculum, student assessment, and managing learning environments. Students also study Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander perspectives in education, individual learner needs, professional sustainability, and reflective practice through the “teacher as researcher” approach. A significant feature of the program is supervised professional experience, where students complete multiple structured teaching placements in real school settings, allowing them to apply theory in practice and develop classroom management and instructional skills. In addition to core studies, students must complete 24 units of senior curriculum courses and 24 units of junior curriculum courses aligned with their chosen teaching subjects. These may include disciplines such as English, mathematics, science, humanities, business, technology, health and physical education, languages, psychology, and the arts. This subject specialisation ensures graduates are prepared to teach across both junior and senior secondary levels. Overall, the program integrates theory, curriculum knowledge, and practical teaching experience to develop confident, competent, and reflective educators capable of meeting the diverse learning needs of secondary school students.
