COURSE CURRICULUM

The Diploma in Outdoor Environmental Studies at UniSC is a 96-unit program designed to develop foundational knowledge and practical skills in outdoor education, environmental science, and nature-based leadership. The curriculum is structured into two parts: four required courses and four elective courses selected from a list of undergraduate options. The required courses include subjects such as Endangered Animals and their Conservation, Marine Vertebrates: Sharks, Seabirds, Fish, Turtles and Whales, Introduction to Environmental Management, Outdoor Living and Travel Skills, Foundations of Outdoor Environmental Studies, Learning in Australian Landscapes, Marine Science Education Fieldwork, Leading Groups in Outdoor Environments, and Communicating Sustainability. These courses build essential skills in outdoor safety, environmental interpretation, leadership, and sustainability awareness. Students then complete four elective courses, chosen from areas such as animal biology, ecology, geography, environmental science, hydrology, geomorphology, sustainability, and environmental impact assessment. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their studies toward their interests while gaining a strong grounding in environmental systems and outdoor practice. The program emphasizes hands-on fieldwork, including learning in natural Australian environments and marine settings, helping students develop practical experience in real-world conditions. Overall, the diploma prepares graduates for careers in outdoor education, ecotourism, environmental interpretation, and conservation, while also providing a pathway to further study in environmental and science-based degrees.
