COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Urban Design and Town Planning (Honours) is a structured professional degree that equips students with the knowledge and practical skills to design, manage, and improve urban environments and communities. The program begins with introductory courses covering key foundations such as urban design studio practice, planning theory and governance, urban economics, sustainable development, planning for health and wellbeing, environmental systems, Indigenous Australia, and sustainability principles. These subjects provide a broad understanding of how cities function and how planning decisions affect people and environments. The developing stage builds on this foundation through advanced study in urban climate science, planning and environmental law, landscapes and place-making, public space design studio work, climate change adaptation, geographic information systems, heritage studies, and social research. The graduate stage focuses on higher-level planning practice, including culture in cities, infrastructure planning, neighbourhood design studios, participation and conflict resolution, environmental economics, advanced planning policy, and community planning studios. Students also complete a major planning practicum and a two-part planning project, which provide significant real-world experience. Specialisation is available through minors such as environmental management, geospatial analysis, sociology, or sustainability. The Honours classification is based on performance in key advanced planning courses and the final planning project, ensuring strong academic and professional capability in urban planning and design.
