COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Work program is structured to develop professional knowledge, practical skills, and ethical understanding required for effective social work practice across diverse communities and settings. The introductory stage includes courses such as Group Processes and Practice, Therapeutic Communication Skills, Foundations of Human Behaviour, Australian Society: Sociology, Introduction to Indigenous Australia, Introduction to Social Work Practice Theories, and Introduction to Social Work and Human Services, which build foundational understanding of human behaviour, society, communication, and social work principles. The developing and graduate stage expands into advanced learning areas including Social Research, Social Justice and Welfare Systems, Mental and Physical Health and Wellbeing, and working with First Nations peoples, multicultural communities, children, youth, families, and people with disabilities. Students also study Ethics, Law and the Helping Professions, Community Development and Social Action, and Critical Social Policy Analysis, strengthening their ability to analyse and respond to complex social issues. Professional practice is developed through two major field education placements in Social Work Field Education 1 and 2, where students gain supervised real-world experience. Additional practice-based courses such as Direct Practice 1 and 2 and Context Responsive Social Work Practice further enhance applied skills. Students also select an elective such as Counselling for Crisis, Trauma and Loss or Working with Victims and Offenders. Overall, the program prepares graduates for ethical, skilled, and culturally responsive social work careers.
