COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (Honours) research program consists of four sequential courses that guide students through the full process of independent scientific investigation, from planning to final examination. HNE420 Honours Research – Methods and Planning (24 units) focuses on developing a research proposal, refining methodologies, and establishing a strong foundation for the chosen scientific project. HNE421 Honours Research – Developing Practice (24 units) involves the early implementation of the research plan and skill development in data collection and practical research techniques, although it is assessed on a pass/fail basis. HNE422 Honours Research – Advanced Practice (24 units) continues the research process, allowing students to deepen their investigation, refine methods, and generate substantial data, also assessed on a pass/fail basis. HNE423 Honours Research – Project Examination (24 units) represents the culmination of the program, where students complete and submit a final research thesis or project for formal assessment and grading. The final Honours classification is determined using a weighted system: 15% of the overall result is based on the mark from HNE420, while 85% is derived from the final examination mark in HNE423, with the two middle courses contributing pass/fail outcomes only. This structure ensures that the highest emphasis is placed on the quality of the final research output, while still supporting skill development throughout the research process. Overall, the program builds advanced research capability and academic rigor.
