COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Counselling curriculum is designed to build strong professional, ethical, and practical skills for working in mental health and human services. The program begins with introductory courses that provide foundational knowledge in counselling theories, therapeutic communication, psychology, group processes, addiction counselling, and cultural awareness, including an understanding of Indigenous Australian perspectives. These subjects help students develop essential communication skills and a basic understanding of human behaviour and mental health. In the developing stage, students progress to more advanced topics such as cognitive behavioural therapy, counselling children and youth, integrative and strengths-based approaches, human development, social research, cultural diversity, and ethics and law in the helping professions. These courses strengthen students’ ability to apply counselling techniques in diverse and real-world contexts. At the graduate level, students focus on specialised counselling areas including crisis, trauma and loss, positive psychology, counselling older adults, and developmental and family counselling. A major component of the program is professional placement, where students complete supervised counselling practice through two placement units, allowing them to apply theoretical knowledge in real client settings. Overall, the degree combines psychology, counselling theory, ethical practice, and hands-on experience to prepare graduates for careers in counselling, mental health support, community services, and related helping professions.
