COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Arts major in Sociology at UniSC consists of eight core courses that help students understand how society works and how social structures shape human behaviour. The program begins with Living in a Digital Society and Australian Society: How does(n’t) it work? – An Introduction to Sociology, which introduce key sociological concepts and explore how modern and Australian societies function. Students then study Social Research, which develops skills in collecting and analysing data to understand social issues, and Understanding Society: An Introduction to Social Theory, which provides foundational theories for analysing social behaviour. The major also includes Social Justice, Welfare and the State, focusing on inequality, welfare systems, and government roles in society, and Understanding Cultural Diversity, which examines how culture influences social interactions. Additional courses such as Sports, Culture and Society explore the social significance of sport, while Gender and Culture focuses on gender roles, identity, and cultural influences. Throughout the program, students build strong skills in research, critical thinking, and data analysis, allowing them to understand complex social issues in both local and global contexts. Overall, this Sociology major prepares graduates for careers in social research, community services, policy development, welfare organisations, and other roles that focus on addressing social inequality and improving society within the Bachelor of Arts framework.
