COURSE CURRICULUM

The History major within the Bachelor of Arts at UniSC consists of eight structured courses that explore how past events, cultures, and societies have shaped the modern world. Students begin with foundational subjects such as History of Australian Popular Culture and Global Citizens: A History of Humanity, which introduce key historical developments from both Australian and global perspectives. They then progress to courses like Heritage: Australian and Global Contexts and The Uses and Abuses of History, which examine how history is preserved, interpreted, and sometimes manipulated in different contexts. The program also includes Explorations in Environmental History, focusing on the relationship between humans and the natural environment, and History of Nationalism and National Identity, which studies how nations and identities are formed over time. Advanced learning is provided through Questioning History: Explorations in the Thinking and Practice of History, which develops critical approaches to historical research, and Urban Histories, which explores the development of cities and urban life. Throughout the major, students build strong skills in research, analysis, critical thinking, and communication by working with historical sources and evidence. Overall, this program prepares graduates for careers in education, research, museums, archives, heritage management, journalism, and other fields that value historical understanding within the Bachelor of Arts framework.
