COURSE CURRICULUM

The English major within the Bachelor of Arts at UniSC is designed to develop a deep understanding of literature, language, and storytelling through eight structured courses. Students begin with foundational subjects such as Playing with Words: An Introduction to Creative Writing Craft and The ‘English’ Tradition: An Introduction to Literary Studies, which introduce core writing techniques and literary analysis skills. They then explore diverse forms of writing and cultural perspectives through courses like Reality Bites: An Exploration of Non-Fiction, Imagined Homelands: An Exploration of Australian Literature, and Reading Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Writing, which broaden their understanding of global and Indigenous voices in literature. The major also includes Languages and Linguistics: Understanding Human Communication, which examines how language works in society. Advanced learning is provided through Wonderworlds: An Exploration of Theory and Fiction and Creative Writing and Editing for Publication, where students refine both analytical and creative writing skills while preparing work for professional contexts. Throughout the program, students build strong abilities in reading, critical thinking, communication, and creative expression. The major blends literary study with practical writing and editing experience, preparing graduates for careers in education, publishing, media, communications, and other fields that value strong analytical and expressive skills.
