COURSE CURRICULUM

The Creative Writing and Publishing major at UniSC within the Bachelor of Arts consists of eight specialised courses designed to develop strong creative, technical, and industry-ready writing skills. Students begin with foundational subjects such as Playing with Words: An Introduction to Creative Writing Craft and Playing with Genre, where they learn the basics of storytelling, narrative structure, and experimenting with different writing styles. As they progress, they explore more focused areas of writing including Writing for Children and Young Adults, Creative Writing for the Illustrated Book, Writing the Short Story, and Writing Poetry, allowing them to develop versatility across multiple creative formats. In the advanced stage, students undertake Writing Your Novel, which requires prior completion of a significant portion of their degree, helping them build long-form storytelling skills. The final course, Creative Writing and Editing for Publication, focuses on refining writing for professional publication and requires completion of most of the program beforehand. Throughout the major, students gain hands-on experience, receive feedback from peers and lecturers, and develop a strong portfolio of creative work. This structure ensures graduates are well-prepared for careers in writing, publishing, editing, content creation, and other communication-based industries, while also building confidence in their creative voice and storytelling ability.
