COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Spiritual Direction is a postgraduate program designed to develop advanced expertise in guiding individuals in their spiritual journeys within the Christian tradition. Graduates gain a deep understanding of the theological and spiritual foundations of spiritual direction and its relationship to broader theological studies. They acquire mastery in critically reflecting on and providing guidance for individual spiritual experiences, grounded in key themes, traditions, and approaches in spirituality. Graduates also develop communication and research skills to justify and interpret theoretical propositions and professional decisions, applying knowledge creatively and with initiative in professional practice and further learning. The program emphasizes the practical application of theological and hermeneutical skills through a substantial research-based project, capstone experience, or other scholarly work.The course structure comprises 288 points, combining foundational, elective, and research components. Students complete 96 points in foundational units specific to Spiritual Direction, 24 points in Biblical Studies, and 24 points in Systematic Theology or Church History. An additional 96 points of postgraduate electives focus on Spiritual Direction, Spirituality, or Pastoral Theology and Ministry Studies. The program culminates in either a capstone unit of at least 24 points in Spiritual Direction or a 48-point minor thesis. Further postgraduate units in Spiritual Direction or Spirituality may also be undertaken to deepen knowledge and skills. This combination ensures graduates are prepared for professional roles in spiritual guidance, ministry, and pastoral leadership, while also providing a pathway for further academic research.
