COURSE CURRICULUM

The Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) is a research-intensive degree designed to develop highly skilled independent researchers capable of making an original contribution to knowledge in divinity or related disciplines. Graduates possess a substantial body of knowledge at the frontier of their field, including expertise that constitutes original scholarly input. They develop an advanced understanding of research principles and methods, enabling them to plan, execute, and critically evaluate complex investigations. PhD candidates acquire expert cognitive, technical, and creative skills, allowing them to analyse and synthesise existing knowledge, reflect on theory and practice, and generate original insights. They apply these skills with intellectual independence and professional accountability, incorporating ethical considerations into the formulation and execution of research projects. Graduates are also equipped to communicate complex research findings clearly and effectively to both specialist and wider audiences, meeting international standards of scholarly excellence.The course structure emphasizes rigorous research training and ongoing scholarly engagement. Candidates must satisfactorily complete confirmation of candidature, adhere to any Human Research Ethics Committee requirements, and submit annual reports throughout their candidature. They prepare and submit a thesis or equivalent work for examination and complete an oral examination. Students are required to participate annually in a minimum of eight hours of research seminars and conferences, and to present at least one seminar or conference paper of no less than 20 minutes between confirmation of candidature and thesis submission. This combination of structured milestones, independent research, and scholarly engagement ensures that PhD graduates are thoroughly prepared for careers in research, academia, leadership, or professional practice, while contributing original knowledge and insights to their field.
