COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Professional Engineering (Mechanical) program at the University of Newcastle requires students to complete 240 units over three years of full-time study. The program consists of 190 units of core courses, 40 units of courses selected from the Course List, and 10 units of elective courses, providing a comprehensive pathway for advanced mechanical engineering education. The core curriculum develops essential knowledge and practical skills in areas including electrical engineering, fluid mechanics, calculus, dynamics of machines, mechanics of solids, engineering risk, project management, mechanical design, materials science, heat transfer, thermodynamics, machine learning, modelling and control. Students also undertake advanced subjects in mechanical design projects, finite element analysis, computational fluid dynamics, and complete an extensive MPE Thesis through research-focused courses. The Course List allows students to tailor their studies by exploring specialized areas such as systems thinking, computer-aided engineering and manufacturing, materials handling, renewable energy conversion, materials synthesis and processing, materials characterisation, financial management, and project leadership. Through a combination of advanced technical learning, practical design experiences, and research activities, the program develops the analytical, innovative, and professional skills required for modern mechanical engineering practice. Graduates are prepared to contribute to industries including manufacturing, energy, automation, robotics, design, and sustainable engineering while developing solutions to complex technological challenges.
