COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Professional Engineering (Civil) program at the University of Newcastle requires students to complete 240 units over three years of full-time study. The program consists of 190 units of core courses, 20 units of design courses, 20 units of courses selected from the course list, and 10 units of electives. The curriculum provides advanced knowledge and practical skills across key areas of civil engineering, including structural engineering, geotechnical engineering, transportation, water resources, materials, risk management, and engineering project management. Core courses develop expertise in numerical methods, structural analysis, civil engineering materials, geomechanics, fluid mechanics, reinforced concrete design, steel design, hydrology, water engineering, advanced design analysis, and machine learning applications in engineering. Students also complete an advanced research component through the MPE Thesis A and B courses, allowing them to investigate complex engineering problems and develop research capabilities. Design courses provide opportunities to apply engineering knowledge through specialized projects in structural, water, or geotechnical engineering. The course list allows students to further tailor their studies through subjects such as infrastructure development, advanced structural analysis, rock mechanics, geotechnical site characterisation, environmental management, contaminant hydrogeology, and town planning. This comprehensive structure prepares graduates for professional practice, innovation, and leadership in the civil engineering industry.
