COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Disaster Risk and Resilience program is designed to equip graduates with the knowledge and skills needed to address the increasing frequency and intensity of natural disasters and other crises worldwide. Over one to two years full time, or the part-time equivalent, students develop the expertise required to identify, assess, and mitigate risks associated with both natural and human-made hazards. The program emphasizes disaster management, risk analysis, emergency preparedness, and community resilience, preparing graduates to make meaningful contributions to their communities and broader society. Students gain the ability to work across a range of sectors, including emergency management, public health, environmental protection, and international development, applying practical and theoretical knowledge to reduce vulnerabilities and enhance resilience.Graduates of the program will have applied analytical and problem-solving skills to address challenges in disaster risk reduction and management, while aligning with the principles of United Nations frameworks, including the UN Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples. They will be able to critically analyse legislative, policy, and procedural influences on disaster risk reduction efforts across public, private, and not-for-profit sectors. Students develop the ability to design resilient organisational strategies, considering the participation of Indigenous peoples and recognising the contributions of Indigenous-led initiatives to disaster resilience. Graduates also acquire skills to evaluate national and international standards and legislative requirements related to engagement with Indigenous communities, ensuring culturally informed and ethical practices. In addition, they gain the ability to conduct research relevant to disaster risk and resilience contexts, supporting evidence-based decision-making and policy development. Overall, the program prepares graduates to lead initiatives that reduce disaster risks, enhance community preparedness, and contribute to sustainable and resilient development at local, national, and global levels.
