COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Speech Pathology (Honours) program at the University of Newcastle requires students to successfully complete 320 units, combining comprehensive coursework, clinical preparation, and research opportunities. Students complete 300 units of core courses that provide essential knowledge and practical skills in speech, language, communication, swallowing, assessment, intervention, and professional practice. In addition to the core requirements, students choose between two Honours pathways. The Ungraded Honours pathway requires students to complete 20 units of electives, allowing them to broaden their knowledge in areas related to speech pathology and health sciences. The Graded Honours pathway requires completion of 20 units of compulsory research courses, including Research Project A and Research Project B, enabling students to undertake advanced investigation and contribute to evidence-based practice. Before enrolling in the Clinical Practice courses, students must successfully complete all core courses at the 1000, 2000, and 3000 levels, ensuring they have developed the required theoretical foundation and professional skills. Students cannot undertake both clinical practice courses simultaneously. The program also requires students to complete a minimum of 40 units at each academic level, including 1000, 2000, 3000, and 4000 levels, while limiting 1000-level study to no more than 120 units. This structured curriculum prepares graduates for professional speech pathology practice and further research opportunities.
