COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) at the University of Newcastle is a comprehensive program designed to develop skilled, ethical, and socially responsible professionals equipped to support individuals, families, and communities. The program requires students to complete 320 units, including 290 units of core courses, 10 units from a designated course list, and 20 units of electives, while ensuring balanced study across all academic levels. Students begin with foundational studies in Aboriginal perspectives, psychology, sociology, and introductory social work, developing an understanding of human behaviour, society, culture, and professional practice. As students progress, they explore advanced areas including social work theory, interpersonal skills, trauma and violence, social policy, legal frameworks, ethics, research, and evidence-based practice. The program includes extensive field education through two professional placements, allowing students to apply their knowledge in real-world community, government, and non-government settings. Students also complete an Honours Project and develop advanced research skills to contribute to social work knowledge and practice. Elective options allow students to broaden their understanding through subjects such as media literacy, anthropology, and human services policy. Combining theoretical learning, practical experience, and research training, the program prepares graduates for careers in community services, child protection, health, advocacy, social policy, and other fields dedicated to promoting social justice, inclusion, and wellbeing.
