COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Science/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) combined degree program at the University of Newcastle requires students to complete 400 units over five years of full-time study, fulfilling the academic requirements of both the Bachelor of Social Science and Bachelor of Laws (Honours) degrees. The program structure includes a combination of core courses, professional development opportunities, legal studies, and a specialized Social Science major. Students complete 230 units of core courses that provide essential knowledge and skills across both disciplines, along with 10 units from the Career-ready Placement Course List to gain practical workplace experience and enhance employability. The program also requires 80 units of courses selected from the LAWS course list, allowing students to develop advanced understanding of legal principles, research, advocacy, and professional practice. In addition, students complete one 80-unit Social Science major, consisting of compulsory and elective courses within a chosen area of study. The major includes 20 units at the 1000 level, including required introductory courses, 20 units at the 2000 level that build intermediate knowledge and analytical skills, and 40 units at the 3000 level that focus on advanced concepts, research, and specialized study. This comprehensive structure develops interdisciplinary expertise, critical thinking, communication skills, and professional capabilities for careers combining social science knowledge with legal practice.
