COURSE CURRICULUM

The Physics major within the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) at the University of Newcastle provides students with an in-depth understanding of the fundamental principles governing matter, energy, and the physical universe. The curriculum combines advanced theoretical knowledge with extensive mathematical and experimental training, preparing students for research and innovation in modern physics. Compulsory courses include Mathematics for Engineering, Science and Technology 1 and 2, Calculus of Science and Engineering, Advanced Physics I and II, Quantum Science, Advanced Mechanics, and Electromagnetism. These subjects develop expertise in classical and modern physics, quantum mechanics, mechanics, electromagnetic theory, and advanced mathematical methods essential for scientific analysis. Students can further broaden their knowledge through elective courses such as Complex Analysis, Numerical Methods, and Particles and Space, which strengthen computational skills and explore particle physics, astrophysics, and advanced mathematical modelling. Additional advanced physics courses are also available through the program handbook in different academic years. The curriculum emphasizes laboratory experimentation, data analysis, mathematical modelling, critical thinking, and research-based learning, enabling students to investigate complex physical phenomena and develop innovative solutions to scientific challenges. Graduates are well prepared for careers in physics research, engineering, space science, renewable energy, data science, technology, education, and government agencies, while also gaining a strong foundation for honours study, postgraduate research, and specialized scientific careers.
