COURSE CURRICULUM

The Geography major within the Bachelor of Science (Advanced) at the University of Newcastle provides students with a comprehensive understanding of the relationships between people, places, and the environment, preparing them to address contemporary social and environmental challenges. The program begins with compulsory courses including Introduction to Human Geography, Earth: Our Dynamic Planet, Spatial Science, and Advanced Spatial Science, establishing a strong foundation in human geography, Earth systems, and geospatial technologies. Students can further expand their knowledge through intermediate-level courses such as Environmental Legislation and Planning, The Sustainable Society, Cities and Regions, Geographies of Development, Catchments and Climate, Earth’s Dynamic Surface, and Applied Quantitative Research, exploring topics related to urban development, environmental governance, sustainability, climate systems, and research methods. Advanced-level study includes courses in Integrated Impact Assessment, Sustainability in the 21st Century, Work Integrated Learning in the Environmental and Development Sectors, Society and Space, Rethinking Development, Coastal Environments and Processes, and Climate Change and Resource Management. These subjects emphasize sustainable planning, environmental assessment, regional development, climate adaptation, and professional experience in real-world settings. Through a combination of fieldwork, spatial analysis, research, and practical learning, students develop critical thinking, analytical, and problem-solving skills. Graduates are well prepared for careers in urban and regional planning, environmental management, sustainability consulting, government, community development, research, and geographic information systems, as well as further postgraduate study.
