COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science with a Geography major combines scientific knowledge with an understanding of human societies, environments, and spatial relationships. The program begins with core science courses that develop essential skills in programming, multidisciplinary laboratory practice, mathematics, statistics, and work-integrated learning. Students specialising in Geography explore the interactions between people, places, landscapes, and environmental systems through courses that integrate social science, earth science, spatial analysis, sustainability, and resource management. The major includes foundational studies such as Introduction to Human Geography, Earth: Our Dynamic Planet, and Spatial Science, followed by advanced learning in areas including Environmental Legislation and Planning, The Sustainable Society, Cities and Regions, Geographies of Development, Catchments and Climate, Earth’s Dynamic Surface, and Applied Quantitative Research. Higher-level courses provide deeper insights into integrated impact assessment, sustainability challenges, society and space, development studies, coastal environments, and climate change and resource management. Through this interdisciplinary approach, students develop skills in geographic information systems (GIS), environmental analysis, policy development, research, and sustainable planning. Graduates are prepared for careers in environmental management, urban and regional planning, government, community development, conservation, sustainability, and research. The program equips students to analyse complex social and environmental challenges and contribute to creating more sustainable communities and environments.
