COURSE CURRICULUM
The Information Technology (IT) program equips students with the skills required to navigate and succeed in a world driven by information and communication technologies (ICT), commonly referred to as the ‘Information Age’ and the ‘Digital Economy’. IT is essential across a wide range of sectors, from health and business to manufacturing and creative industries, providing solutions to organisational, business, and social challenges. At the University of Newcastle, the IT degree is designed to produce graduates who are technically proficient, creative, and adaptable, ready to meet the evolving demands of the industry. Students develop expertise in programming, artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, and cloud computing through one of two major pathways: the ICT development major, which focuses on building new systems and applications, or the ICT professional major, which emphasizes securing, integrating, deploying, and managing ICT technologies. The program also offers specialised pathways, allowing students to take four courses in education to become an ICT trainer or four courses in health to specialise in e-health systems, giving graduates the flexibility to apply IT skills across diverse fields such as business, climate science, criminology, and animation. Graduates gain comprehensive knowledge of information technology, focusing on interconnected applications, information management, and user requirements to support ethical and professional practice. They develop critical reasoning and systems thinking skills, enabling them to understand and navigate the constraints of contemporary enterprises. The program fosters proficiency in working both independently and collaboratively, applying evidence-based approaches to create, modify, and maintain IT solutions. Problem-solving, project management, and technical expertise are emphasized to generate effective solutions to complex technical and organisational challenges. Additionally, graduates demonstrate professionalism, clearly communicating IT principles and practices to specialist and non-specialist audiences. Overall, the program prepares IT professionals to be innovative, adaptable, and impactful in a rapidly changing technological landscape.
