COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Development Studies/Bachelor of Social Science requires students to complete a maximum of 320 units through a combination of core courses, electives, practical learning, and specialized majors. The program includes 130 units of core courses that provide a strong foundation in development studies and social sciences, covering topics such as Indigenous perspectives, economics, environmental ethics, global poverty, sociology, professional skills, development geography, social analysis, research ethics, quantitative and qualitative research methods, policy development, program management, and evaluation. Students also complete 10 units from the 1000-level Development Studies course list and 10 units from the 2000-level list, selecting subjects related to community engagement, Indigenous rights, environmental sustainability, anthropology, tourism, cultural practices, reconciliation, international relations, urban development, and social research. To enhance employability, the program includes a compulsory 10-unit career-ready placement through professional studio practice, work-integrated learning in environmental and development sectors, or a professional placement, enabling students to gain valuable workplace experience. Students must also complete one 80-unit Social Science major, choosing from Criminology, History, Human Resource Management, Human Services, Linguistics, Psychology Studies, or Tourism, Society and Sustainability, alongside one 80-unit Development Studies major. This integrated curriculum develops graduates with advanced analytical, research, communication, and policy skills for careers in government, community services, international development, research, advocacy, and social policy.
