COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Development Studies/Bachelor of Media and Communication requires students to complete exactly 320 units through a combination of core courses, practical learning, specialized majors, and electives. The program includes 140 units of core courses that provide a strong foundation in development studies and media, covering areas such as Indigenous perspectives, creative collaboration, media culture, communication concepts, economics, environmental ethics, global poverty, sociology, digital media engagement, global media industries, audience interaction, development geography, communication and creativity, and sustainable development. Students also complete a 10-unit career-ready placement, choosing from professional studio practice, work-integrated learning in the environmental and development sectors, or a professional career-ready placement to gain valuable industry experience and strengthen workplace skills. The degree requires completion of one 80-unit Development Studies major, with options including Cultures and Citizenship, Environmental Sustainability, Geopolitics and Economic Development, or Urban and Regional Development, allowing students to specialize in key areas of global development. In addition, students complete one 80-unit Media and Communication major, selecting from Media Production, News Media, or Public Relations to develop advanced professional communication and media expertise. A further 10 units of electives provide flexibility to explore complementary interests. This well-rounded curriculum equips graduates with strong analytical, creative, technical, and communication skills for careers in media, journalism, public relations, advocacy, government, community development, and international organizations.
