COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Development Studies/Bachelor of Laws (Honours) requires students to complete an integrated curriculum that combines legal education with interdisciplinary development studies. The program includes 180 units of core Law courses, covering essential areas such as legal systems, torts, criminal law, contracts, constitutional law, administrative law, evidence, company law, equity and trusts, property, public international law, professional conduct, international human rights law, and environmental law. Students also complete 60 units of Law electives, allowing them to specialize in areas including family law, commercial law, employment law, taxation, intellectual property, climate change law, human rights, dispute resolution, advocacy, Indigenous law, international trade, and legal innovation. The Development Studies component consists of 80 units of core courses, focusing on global poverty, environmental ethics, sociology, economics, development geography, Indigenous perspectives, and work-integrated learning, together with an 80-unit Development Studies major selected from Cultures and Citizenship, Environmental Sustainability, Globalisation and Economic Development, or Urban and Regional Development. Students are exempt from selected Development Studies electives and free-choice electives because complementary law subjects, including International Human Rights Law and Environmental Law, fulfill those requirements within the combined degree. This carefully structured program develops advanced legal, analytical, policy, research, and communication skills, preparing graduates for professional careers in legal practice, public policy, international development, environmental law, human rights, government, and advocacy.
