COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Translation and Interpreting at UNSW requires students to complete a total of 96 Units of Credit (UOC) when taken as a standalone program, providing a structured pathway that combines research training, advanced language practice, and flexible elective study. The program begins with a 6 UOC Research Core Course, which introduces students to essential research methods and analytical approaches used in translation and interpreting studies. This foundation supports critical thinking and academic inquiry throughout the degree. Students then complete 24 UOC of Advanced Disciplinary Courses in Interpreting, where they develop high-level interpreting skills, including consecutive and simultaneous interpreting, cross-cultural communication, and professional practice in real-world contexts. In parallel, they undertake 24 UOC of Advanced Disciplinary Courses in Translation, focusing on advanced translation techniques, accuracy, style, terminology management, and specialised translation across different domains. A significant component of the program is the 42 UOC of Prescribed Electives, which allows students to broaden their expertise in related areas such as applied linguistics, language studies, or professional communication, enabling them to tailor their learning to their career goals. In addition, students complete an Academic Writing Course designed to strengthen their scholarly writing, research communication, and academic literacy skills. Overall, the program structure ensures graduates develop advanced bilingual competence, professional translation and interpreting expertise, and strong research and communication skills for global careers.
