COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering Science (Water, Wastewater and Waste Engineering) at UNSW Sydney is a 96 Units of Credit (UOC) postgraduate program designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and practical skills in water systems, wastewater treatment, and sustainable waste management. The program is intended for graduates with a four-year accredited engineering degree who want to specialise, retrain, or broaden their expertise in environmental and water engineering fields. It focuses on developing solutions for safe, efficient, and sustainable management of water resources, wastewater, and solid waste in urban and industrial environments. The program begins with 6 UOC of foundational core courses that introduce essential principles of environmental and water engineering systems. Students then complete 30 UOC of disciplinary knowledge electives, covering areas such as water treatment technologies, wastewater engineering, pollution control, resource recovery, and environmental systems. The curriculum also includes 12 UOC of advanced disciplinary knowledge electives and 12 UOC of advanced disciplinary core courses, allowing deeper study in specialised topics such as treatment processes, system design, and emerging environmental technologies. An additional 12 UOC of advanced disciplinary courses further strengthens technical expertise in applied water and waste engineering solutions. The program also includes 6 UOC of engineering technical management courses, which develop leadership, communication, ethics, and project management skills. The final 18 UOC is dedicated to research or professional core work, where students apply their knowledge to real-world environmental challenges. Overall, the program prepares graduates for advanced careers in water engineering, wastewater treatment, environmental consulting, and sustainable resource management.
