COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering Science (Sustainable Systems) at UNSW Sydney is a 96 Units of Credit (UOC) postgraduate program designed to equip students with advanced knowledge and interdisciplinary skills in sustainability, environmental systems, and engineering solutions for global challenges. The program is structured to help graduates understand how engineering can be used to develop holistic solutions to unsustainable practices across industries and infrastructure systems. It begins with 12 UOC of foundational core courses that introduce key principles of engineering systems, sustainability concepts, and environmental problem-solving approaches. Students then complete 6 UOC of disciplinary core courses that provide essential technical grounding in sustainable engineering practice. A major component of the program is the 30 UOC of disciplinary knowledge electives, which allow students to explore areas such as industrial ecology, renewable energy systems, environmental engineering, and sustainability management. The program also includes 6 UOC of advanced disciplinary electives and 18 UOC of advanced disciplinary core courses, which deepen expertise in complex sustainability challenges, system design, and advanced engineering applications. In addition, 6 UOC of engineering technical management courses develop leadership, communication, ethics, and project management skills essential for professional practice. The final 18 UOC is dedicated to research, capstone, or project work, where students apply their learning to real-world sustainability challenges. Overall, the program prepares graduates for careers in sustainability consulting, environmental engineering, renewable energy, infrastructure planning, and corporate sustainability leadership roles.
