COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering Science (Structural Engineering) at UNSW Sydney is a 96 Units of Credit (UOC) postgraduate program designed to provide advanced technical knowledge and professional skills in structural engineering and infrastructure design. The program is aimed at practising engineers and recent graduates who want to specialise in the design, analysis, and performance of structures used in civil infrastructure. It begins with 24 UOC of foundational core courses that establish essential principles in engineering analysis, materials behaviour, and structural mechanics. Students then complete 24 UOC of electives, allowing them to tailor their learning toward specific interests such as construction methods, structural systems, or advanced modelling techniques. The program includes 24 UOC of advanced disciplinary core courses that focus on complex structural engineering topics, including steel and concrete design, structural stability, bridge engineering, computational structural mechanics, and advanced materials technology. In addition, 6 UOC of engineering technical management courses develop professional competencies in leadership, communication, project management, and ethical decision-making in engineering practice. The final 18 UOC is dedicated to research, capstone, or project work, where students apply advanced theoretical and computational knowledge to real-world structural engineering challenges. Overall, the program prepares graduates for advanced careers in structural engineering, construction, infrastructure development, and consulting, equipping them with strong analytical, design, and problem-solving capabilities essential for modern engineering practice.
