COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering Science (Geoenergy & Geostorage) at UNSW Sydney is a 96 Units of Credit (UOC) postgraduate program designed to develop advanced technical and professional skills in geoenergy, geostorage, and subsurface engineering. The program can typically be completed in 1–2 years of full-time study and combines disciplinary knowledge, technical management, and research-based learning. Students begin with 24 UOC of foundational core courses, including subjects such as Earth systems, formation evaluation, reservoir engineering, and drilling and completion engineering, which establish strong technical fundamentals. They then complete 24 UOC of disciplinary knowledge electives covering areas like mining geomechanics, reservoir characterisation, geostorage modelling, project economics, decommissioning, and carbon capture and storage applications. The program also includes 24 UOC of advanced disciplinary core courses, focusing on emerging technologies such as data analytics in energy systems, geothermal engineering, unconventional reservoirs, digital core analysis, and automated resource technologies. In addition, students undertake 6 UOC of engineering technical management courses, which develop leadership, ethical practice, sustainability awareness, project management, and decision-making skills. A key component of the degree is the enquiry-based research project, where students can either pursue postgraduate research preparation or take an entrepreneurship pathway such as a startup-focused course. Overall, the program prepares graduates for advanced careers in energy transition, carbon storage, subsurface engineering, and resource development industries with strong technical and leadership capabilities.
