COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering Science (Energy Systems) at UNSW Sydney is a 96 Units of Credit (UOC) postgraduate program designed to develop advanced knowledge and skills in modern energy and power systems engineering. The program structure is carefully designed to balance foundational learning, technical specialization, and applied research, preparing students for the rapidly evolving energy sector. It begins with 12 UOC of foundational core courses that establish essential principles in energy systems and electrical engineering. Students then complete 36 UOC of disciplinary knowledge electives, where they build strong expertise in areas such as power systems, renewable energy integration, energy conversion, electric machines, and smart grid technologies. This is followed by 6 UOC of engineering and technical management courses, which develop professional competencies including leadership, project management, communication, and ethical engineering practice. The program also includes 24 UOC of advanced disciplinary knowledge electives, allowing students to deepen their understanding of complex and emerging energy challenges. Finally, 18 UOC is dedicated to research, capstone, or project work, where students apply theoretical knowledge to real-world engineering problems and develop strong analytical, design, and problem-solving skills. Overall, the program prepares graduates for advanced roles in energy engineering, renewable energy systems, utilities, smart grid development, and engineering consultancy, equipping them with both technical expertise and professional capability.
