COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Engineering (Biomedical Engineering) at UNSW Sydney is a 96 Units of Credit (UOC) postgraduate program designed to develop advanced expertise in biomedical engineering through a structured mix of coursework, electives, research, and industry experience. The program begins with 6 UOC of core courses that establish essential foundational knowledge in engineering principles relevant to biomedical applications. Students then complete 30 UOC of disciplinary electives, allowing them to build strong expertise in key biomedical engineering areas. This is followed by 36 UOC of advanced disciplinary electives, which deepen technical knowledge in specialised fields such as biomechanics, bioinstrumentation, tissue engineering, and biomedical computation. In addition, students undertake 12 UOC of engineering and technical management electives to develop leadership, project management, and professional engineering skills required in industry environments. A further 12 UOC is dedicated to research core courses, which build capability in research methodology, analysis, and problem-solving for complex biomedical challenges. The program also includes an industrial experience component, providing practical exposure to real-world engineering practice and strengthening employability through hands-on learning in professional settings. Course substitution options may be available depending on prior study or approved alternatives.
