COURSE CURRICULUM

The City Planning program at UNSW is designed to be completed over two years of full-time study, although part-time options are also available to suit different student needs. Each academic year is divided into three terms, with an additional optional summer study period. During a standard term, students typically take two to three courses, while the summer term allows for one course. The program consists of nine core City Planning courses, four prescribed electives, and a capstone project that students undertake in their final year. The core courses provide essential knowledge and skills in urban planning principles, preparing students to understand and respond to the complex challenges faced by cities. The prescribed electives offer students the opportunity to explore specific areas of interest and tailor their learning to align with their career goals.In the final year, students complete a capstone project which serves as a major focus of their studies. This project allows students to deepen their expertise by choosing either an independent research thesis or a major urban design studio. The capstone project is designed to help students develop advanced skills and produce a significant piece of work that can showcase their abilities to future employers. For students interested in emerging fields within city planning, there is an optional specialisation in City Analytics. This specialisation involves selecting all four prescribed electives from a group of courses focused on the use of big data and urban analytics to shape future cities. Students pursuing this path can also concentrate their capstone project on data-driven approaches to city planning, gaining expertise in applying analytics to real-world urban challenges. The program structure is flexible enough to accommodate full-time or part-time study, ensuring that students can balance their studies with other commitments.
