COURSE CURRICULUM

The Master of Applied Linguistics program at UNSW offers flexibility to suit different levels of prior knowledge and experience, allowing students to complete their degree in one to two years. The academic year at UNSW is divided into three terms, plus an optional summer study period. Students can choose to study full-time or part-time, fitting two to three courses per term and possibly one course in the summer term, depending on their schedule.The program is designed to recognise previous learning and experience, providing three different streams based on individual student backgrounds. The first stream, Applied Linguistics A, is a one-year program suited for those with significant prior knowledge. In this stream, students complete two core courses, two electives, and four core research courses in their first year. This option is ideal for students who want to complete their degree quickly.Applied Linguistics B is a 1.7-year program that balances foundational knowledge with research and electives. In the first year, students undertake two core courses, two electives, and four research courses. The second year includes one research course and three electives, allowing students to deepen their research expertise while also tailoring their studies to specific interests through electives.The longest option, Applied Linguistics C, is a full two-year program suitable for students seeking a comprehensive study experience or those with less prior exposure to linguistics. In the first year, students complete four core courses and four research courses. The second year focuses on one research course and seven elective courses, offering extensive opportunities to specialise in areas such as intercultural communication, language acquisition, or language technologies.Overall, this flexible structure supports a wide range of student needs and career goals, ensuring that graduates are well-prepared to apply their linguistic knowledge and research skills in various professional and academic settings.
