COURSE CURRICULUM

The Juris Doctor (JD) program at UNSW Sydney is a comprehensive postgraduate law degree requiring the completion of 144 Units of Credit (UOC), with most courses carrying a value of 6 UOC. The program is structured to provide students with a strong foundation in Australian law while allowing opportunities for specialization through elective study. Students must complete 16 core courses totaling 96 UOC, covering essential areas such as criminal law, public and private law, legal ethics, legal research and writing, administrative law, torts, contracts, constitutional law, business associations, evidence, dispute resolution, land law, equity, and trusts. These courses develop critical legal knowledge, analytical reasoning, advocacy, and professional skills required for legal practice. In addition, students complete seven law elective courses worth 42 UOC, selected from a diverse catalogue of more than 200 subjects spanning commercial and corporate law, human rights, environmental law, technology law, international law, and other specialized fields, enabling students to tailor their studies to their career goals and interests. The final component is a prescribed theory elective worth 6 UOC, chosen from subjects such as Law and Social Theory, Legal Theory, Theories of Law and Justice, or Legal Experimentalism. Together, these components create a rigorous and flexible legal education that prepares graduates for professional practice and broader leadership roles.
