COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) / Bachelor of Social Sciences at UNSW requires students to complete a total of 240 Units of Credit (UOC), combining professional social work training with a broad education in social sciences. The Social Work (Honours) component accounts for 168 UOC and forms the core of the degree, providing students with comprehensive training in social work theory, practice, ethics, and applied social sciences. This includes developing skills in working with individuals, families, and communities facing complex challenges such as mental health issues, poverty, discrimination, and family violence. The program also includes supervised field education placements that provide essential real-world experience in professional social work settings. The Social Sciences component contributes 96 UOC and allows students to explore key areas such as sociology, politics, economics, international relations, and environmental studies. Through this component, students develop strong analytical, research, and critical thinking skills that help them understand and address complex social, political, and economic issues. The degree structure may also include double counting and course substitution rules, allowing certain subjects to satisfy requirements across both components and reduce duplication. Overall, this double degree equips graduates with a strong interdisciplinary foundation, combining practical social work skills with a deep understanding of social systems. Graduates are well prepared for careers in social services, community development, policy, advocacy, and other roles focused on improving social wellbeing and driving meaningful social change.
