COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Social Work (Honours) / Criminology & Criminal Justice at UNSW requires students to complete a total of 240 Units of Credit (UOC), combining professional social work training with criminology and criminal justice studies. The Social Work (Honours) component accounts for 168 UOC and forms the core of the degree, providing students with comprehensive knowledge and practical skills in social work theory, ethics, and practice. This includes training in supporting individuals, families, and communities facing challenges such as mental health issues, homelessness, addiction, and family violence, along with supervised field placements that build real-world professional experience. The Criminology & Criminal Justice component contributes 96 UOC and focuses on understanding crime, justice systems, and social responses to deviance. It includes criminology core courses, social science core subjects, and prescribed electives that allow students to explore topics such as law, psychology, sociology, and criminal behaviour. The program also includes structured course overlaps and substitutions, where certain subjects like SOSS1000, SOSS1001, and ARTS2871 are double-counted across both degrees, reducing duplication while maintaining academic depth. Students also take SOSS3008 instead of SOSS3003 as part of program requirements. Through this integrated structure, the degree develops strong analytical, research, and communication skills, preparing graduates for careers in social work, criminal justice, policy development, community services, and related fields focused on social impact and justice outcomes.
