COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Science (Advanced Mathematics) (Honours) at UNSW requires students to complete a total of 192 Units of Credit (UOC) when undertaken as a standalone program. The structure is designed to build strong mathematical foundations while allowing flexibility and breadth through electives and general education. A major component of the degree is the 144 UOC of Advanced Mathematics core courses, which include the selection of one approved Bachelor of Advanced Mathematics (Honours) major, along with a 48 UOC Honours year. During this honours year, students undertake advanced coursework and complete a substantial research project, developing independent analytical and problem-solving skills. Within the core structure, students also complete Science elective courses, which must be selected from the approved Science subjects listed in Table 1 of the Additional Information section. In addition to the core requirements, students must complete 36 UOC of Free Electives, which can be chosen from any faculty across the university at any stage of the program, allowing for interdisciplinary study or extension into other areas of interest. Finally, 12 UOC of General Education courses are required, which provide broader learning outside the student’s main discipline and can also be completed at any stage of the degree. Overall, this structure balances depth in advanced mathematics with flexibility and breadth across other fields.
