COURSE CURRICULUM

The UNSW Bachelor of Science / Education (Secondary) requires students to complete a total of 192 Units of Credit (UOC), combining strong scientific training with professional education preparation. The Bachelor of Science component accounts for 96 UOC and includes core courses, an approved Science major, Science elective courses, and employability experience courses. This structure ensures students build deep disciplinary knowledge in their chosen science field while also developing practical, career-ready skills through structured professional experiences. The Science major and associated method courses are designed to align with teaching areas in secondary education, ensuring graduates are well prepared to teach specific STEM subjects in schools. The Bachelor of Education (Secondary) component also contributes 96 UOC and provides the pedagogical foundation required for effective teaching practice. It includes 66 UOC of Education core courses, which cover learning theory, curriculum design, classroom management, and student development. In addition, students complete 24 UOC of prescribed education method electives that focus on teaching strategies for specific subject areas, as well as 6 UOC of prescribed education electives that broaden their understanding of educational contexts and practices. The program also integrates employability experiences across both components, helping students connect theory with real-world teaching practice. Overall, this double degree equips graduates with both strong scientific expertise and professional teaching capability, preparing them for a rewarding career as secondary school science or mathematics educators.
