COURSE CURRICULUM

The Materials Science and Engineering program requires students to complete a total of 192 UOC when taken as a standalone degree. The core disciplinary component, MATSM1 Materials Science and Engineering (Materials Engineering), accounts for 168 UOC and forms the main focus of the program. This component provides in-depth study of how materials are designed, analysed, and applied across different industries, integrating principles from physics, chemistry, and engineering to develop advanced technical understanding. In addition to core study, students must complete ENGG4999 Industrial Training, which represents 60 days of approved industry experience. While this component carries 0 UOC, it is a compulsory requirement that ensures students gain practical exposure to real-world engineering environments and develop professional skills. The program also includes 12 UOC of Free Electives, allowing students to explore subjects outside their core discipline or tailor their studies to specific interests and career goals. A further 12 UOC of General Education courses is required, helping students broaden their academic perspective and strengthen critical thinking through interdisciplinary learning. Overall, this structure balances technical depth, practical industry experience, and academic flexibility, preparing graduates for careers in materials engineering, advanced manufacturing, renewable energy, biomedical materials, and other technology-driven industries focused on innovation and sustainability.
