COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Design/Bachelor of Education (Secondary) at UNSW Sydney is a 192 Units of Credit (UOC) double degree that integrates creative design training with professional secondary teaching preparation. It is structured across two equal components: a 96 UOC Bachelor of Design and a 96 UOC Bachelor of Education (Secondary). The Education component includes 66 UOC of Education core courses that build foundational knowledge in pedagogy, curriculum studies, classroom management, and adolescent learning. Students also complete 24 UOC of prescribed Education method electives, where they develop specialised teaching strategies for their chosen subject area, along with 6 UOC of additional Education electives to broaden their professional preparation. The Design component consists of a 96 UOC specialisation, allowing students to develop advanced expertise in a chosen design field while strengthening creative, technical, and conceptual skills through studio-based learning. The program also includes NESA accreditation requirements, ensuring graduates meet the professional standards needed to teach in secondary schools. By combining structured education theory with hands-on creative practice, the degree prepares students for real-world teaching through extensive practical experience and school placements. Graduates are equipped to become qualified Visual Arts or Design teachers while maintaining strong industry-level design capabilities.
