COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Criminology and Criminal Justice at UNSW Sydney is a 144 Units of Credit (UOC) standalone undergraduate program structured to provide both depth and flexibility in understanding crime and the justice system. The degree includes a 96 UOC disciplinary component made up of a 42 UOC Criminology & Criminal Justice core, a 36 UOC Social Science core, and 18 UOC of prescribed criminology electives, ensuring students develop a strong foundation in theories of crime, social control, and criminal justice institutions. Alongside this, students complete 36 UOC of free electives, allowing them to broaden their studies across other disciplines, tailor their degree to specific interests, or build complementary skills relevant to future careers. A further 12 UOC of General Education courses provides exposure to areas outside the social sciences, encouraging well-rounded academic development and interdisciplinary thinking. The program integrates critical analysis, research methods, and real-world applications to help students understand complex issues such as policing, courts, corrections, drug policy, human rights, and social inequality. Through this structure, students gain both specialised criminological knowledge and transferable skills in communication, analysis, and problem-solving. Graduates are prepared for careers in justice-related fields, policy and research roles, community services, or further postgraduate study, with the ability to engage thoughtfully with contemporary social and criminal justice challenges.
