COURSE CURRICULUM

At UNSW, each academic year is divided into three standard terms, with an optional summer study period. This flexible structure allows students to tailor their study load to suit their personal commitments and academic goals, whether studying full-time or part-time. The program is designed so that certain foundational courses are taken in the first and second years, ensuring students are adequately prepared for more advanced coursework in the later stages of their degree. Typically, students can take two or three courses per term, with the option of adding one additional course during the summer term to accelerate progress or balance their workload.A standard four-year full-time study plan in the Bachelor of City Planning (Honours) might begin with six core courses and two electives in the first year. These foundational subjects provide the essential theoretical and practical knowledge required to progress through the program. In the second year, students usually complete eight core courses, which further develop technical planning skills and knowledge in areas such as urban design, planning law, and environmental sustainability.The third year is known as the Practice Year and includes five practice-based courses alongside three electives. This unique component allows students to apply their academic learning in real-world planning environments through internships or industry placements, gaining valuable professional experience and networking opportunities. The Practice Year is a standout feature of the program and a crucial step in preparing for employment in the planning sector.In the final year, students complete an honours component that includes a research core course, a studio core course, two electives, and a thesis. This stage of the program emphasises independent research, critical thinking, and the ability to design and implement comprehensive planning strategies. It prepares graduates for leadership roles in urban and regional planning or further academic research.
