COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Biotechnology (Honours) at UNSW provides a rigorous, research-led education that blends core scientific knowledge with industry-relevant skills. In the first year, students build a foundational understanding of biology, chemistry, and mathematics through courses such as Molecules, Cells and Genes; Chemistry 1A and 1B; Mathematics for Life Sciences; and Statistics for Life and Social Sciences. These are complemented by introductory biotechnology courses like Applied Biomolecular Sciences and Current Trends in Biotechnology, which introduce students to the evolving nature and applications of biotechnology in modern industries. Students also begin exploring more advanced biological concepts with Principles of Biochemistry (Advanced), Principles of Molecular Biology (Advanced), and Microbiology 1, establishing a strong basis for higher-level studies. As students progress to later stages of the program, they dive deeper into key focus areas of biotechnology, including Biotechnology and Bioengineering, Medical Biotechnology, Commercial Biotechnology, and Synthetic Biology. These courses are designed not only to develop technical expertise but also to bridge science with its commercial and industrial applications. The degree structure ensures that graduates are not only proficient in molecular and cellular biology, but also understand the broader context in which biotechnology operates—from medical innovation to ethical and legal frameworks. Practical learning is a central element of the program, with opportunities for internships, industry placements, and hands-on research projects. By the end of the degree, students undertake a research-focused Honours year, conducting an independent project under academic supervision. This equips them with essential scientific inquiry, communication, and problem-solving skills, setting the stage for careers in biotech research, pharmaceuticals, healthcare, food science, or environmental technology.
