COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Architectural Studies at UNSW requires the completion of 144 units of credit (UOC) and can be finished in three years with full-time study or between four to six years part-time. The degree includes six design studio courses totaling 48 UOC, which provide hands-on experience in architectural design. These studios progress sequentially from Architectural Design Studio 1 through to Architectural Design Studio 6, allowing students to develop and refine their design skills over time. Additionally, students complete eleven core courses worth 66 UOC that cover essential topics such as architectural science, building environments, construction and structures, communication in the built environment, history and theory of design, and building information modelling. This core curriculum ensures a comprehensive understanding of the technical, theoretical, and historical aspects of architecture. Students are also required to take one elective course from the School of Built Environment, worth 6 UOC, which allows for some specialization or exploration within the field. Alongside this, two free elective courses totaling 12 UOC must be completed, offering flexibility to choose courses either within the School of Built Environment or from other faculties to broaden their academic experience. Finally, the program includes two general education courses, also totaling 12 UOC, which encourage cross-disciplinary learning and help students develop skills beyond architecture, such as critical thinking and cultural awareness. Overall, the degree structure balances design studios, core architectural knowledge, elective flexibility, and broad educational development, preparing students for the demands of the architecture profession and further studies.
