COURSE CURRICULUM

The Bachelor of Actuarial Studies/Commerce is a comprehensive four-year double degree program comprising 32 courses designed to equip students with strong analytical, business, and financial skills. The curriculum includes core actuarial studies courses that build foundational knowledge in risk assessment, probability, and financial mathematics. Students can also choose from Level 3 actuarial elective courses to deepen their expertise and have the option to complete an additional major within actuarial studies if they wish to specialize further. Integrated into the program is the Commerce Integrated First Year, which offers a cohesive introduction to key business disciplines, followed by the completion of one mandatory major within the Commerce component. In addition to the required majors, students can select Business School electives, which also allow them the flexibility to pursue a third major from a list of approved disciplines, providing a broader academic scope. To encourage a well-rounded education, the program includes general education courses from faculties outside the Business School. A key feature of the degree is its emphasis on professional development. Students must complete at least one Work Integrated Learning experience, such as an internship or business practicum, to gain practical industry exposure and apply theoretical knowledge in real-world settings. In their final year, students participate in a capstone experience called the Final Year Synthesis, which challenges them to integrate and apply their learning from the entire Commerce degree. Additionally, they are required to complete the COMM3999 myBCom Graduate Portfolio, a reflective and strategic portfolio that documents their skills development, academic achievements, and career goals. Overall, this double degree is structured to provide a robust education in both actuarial science and commerce, blending academic rigor with professional readiness to prepare graduates for a range of careers in finance, insurance, consulting, and beyond.
